The fact that it is a colorful graphic novel about a female superhero learning to use her powers should make it popular. It addresses the pressures modern students face-and not just in urban environments. Girl on Fire is an empowering read for high schoolers.

There's a lot going on and it doesn't seamlessly flow and connect but it can be overlooked because "the girl is on fire!".
The first book is a little disjointed in how it tells the story- introducing us to Lolo's family situation, but also her friend, the other kid who has some superhero abilities too, the gang, and the mean girl at school. There's action and it can certainly continue as a series. Our main character is coming in to powers she at first didn't know she had and now she's using them to fight evil in the form of a gang who wants to run the area by having everyone from the police to her father (who owns a moving company) pay him off to build his empire. Marvel with a side of street that would be perfect for Angie Thomas fans who want justice, and it's got a whole lot of heart with the underlying family story.

Plot-wise everything happens a little too fast which made it hard to really invest in any of the conflicts. I could have used about 100 more pages to get to know Lolo's family, best friend, and frenemies. The characters here are the best part, but they all needed more development. Our heroine discovers, practices, and uses her powers for good while trying to balance school, family, and neighborhood dangers.
